But with large stands of timber bamboo now quite scarce in many parts of Haiti, most raras have turned to using lengths of PVC pipe fitted with an end-cap. They are performed by blowing into and across a hole drilled in the cap. PVC is more durable than bamboo, but old-timers say there is a notable difference in the quality of the notes played. As Ronald put it in an interview, \u201cwe know that it was with five bamboos and two drums that we took our independence.\u201d He\u2019s referring to the ceremony of the Bwa Kayiman, the legendary vodou ceremony said to have launched the Haitian revolution. The presumption being that the participants marched out into battle as a kind of rara, after blowing a conch shell to summon fellow slaves to participate in the revolt.
